Ductless mini splits are a great way to cool your home, but before you buy one it’s important that you know what size unit you need. This article will help you figure out how to find the right sized ductless mini split for your home!
1. The first step in figuring out which size is best for your house is finding its square footage (SF). If possible, measure from wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor: this includes any of the actual living space plus any unoccupied areas such as an unfinished basement or patio area. Then divide by 144—that’s how many square feet there are per room. For example if my apartment has 900 sq ft then I would have 90 rooms .
If you’re measuring rooms, try to keep from counting each room as a square foot. The average living space is about 150-200 sq ft per person. If there’s an empty bedroom that has no furniture in it then don’t count the full 900 sq feet since it doesn’t need cooling or heating. This will help give your ductless mini split a more accurate estimate of how much energy it needs and will save you money on electricity bills!
2. Next find out what size unit (BTU) you need by looking up the BTUs needed for your area at EnergyStar.gov . You can also use this calculator provided by Schneider Electric:
- Room Size Calculator – Enter Floor Area
- BTUs Needed
This is the total floor area not just one room. For example, a 1000 sq foot house divided into two 500 sq ft rooms would need to enter 2000 for “Floor Area”. The calculator will give you an estimate of how many BTU’s are needed for your home or office. It also accounts for ceiling height and insulation factors which can change depending on the type of building in question. This number should be used as a baseline only-you may want to install more if there are wood floors without carpeting or more people living in your space than usual (such as during winter). If you have any questions please contact Schneider Electric.

3. The last step is choosing the size unit. Schneider Electric has a wide range of indoor units with various BTU outputs. You can use the calculator to determine which unit you need as well as an approximate installation cost .
Once installed, your ductless system will cool and heat within minutes! Ductless systems are more energy efficient than traditional hvac solutions because they don’t have to circulate air through a building’s labyrinthine network of pipes. Schneider Electric offers different size options so that no matter what type or configuration your home is-you’ll be able to find the perfect unit for your space.
